Important changes in future releases that might require additional steps or planning during upgrade.

Arc upgrade path now requires an interim version

Starting with Arc v2.5.0, upgrading from Arc v2.3.0, or earlier to an Arc that is v2.5.0, or later on Windows devices will require an interim step through Arc v2.4.0. Vantage and future Nozomi Networks Operating System (N2OS) versions will handle the interim step automatically, without user input.

Background

Arc on Windows enforces a code-signing validation during upgrades.

The current security certificate, that Arc v2.3.0, or earlier uses, expires on January 31, 2026. A new certificate, valid until January 31, 2029, has been issued.

Because Arc v2.3.0 only trusts the current certificate, it cannot directly accept an upgrade package that is only signed with the new certificate.

Arc v2.4.0 will be signed with the current certificate, and will trust the new certificate. This makes it the required interim upgrade version.

Arc v2.5.0, or later will be signed with the new certificate and Arc v2.4.0 will accept it during upgrades.

What's changing?

Users previously could upgrade directly between distant Arc versions.

Upgrading Arc v2.3.0, or earlier to Arc v2.5.0, or later now requires Arc v2.4.0 as an interim step.

Vantage and future N2OS versions will handle the interim step automatically, without user input.

For a seamless user experience, Arc v2.5.0 will be released at the same time as the N2OS version that supports the automatic interim upgrade step.

Actions required

  • For Guardians with N2OS versions that support automatic upgrade: see the Automatic upgrade section below
  • For Guardians with N2OS versions that don’t support automatic upgrade: see the Edge case section below

Automatic upgrade

When Guardian upgrades Arc v2.3.0, or earlier:

  • Cycle 1: Guardian delivers Arc v2.4.0 (supports both certificates)
  • Cycle 2: Guardian delivers the latest Arc (supports the new certificate)

Edge case: Guardians without automatic upgrade support

Attempts to upgrade Arc v2.3.0, or earlier to Arc v2.5.0, or later will fail.

When this happens, users can:

  • (Recommended) Upgrade Guardian to an N2OS version that supports automatic upgrade, or
  • Do a manual, two step Arc upgrade: first upgrade to Arc v2.4.0, then upgrade to Arc v2.5.0, or later version
